A Tuskegee Airman Over Europe

It’s always been my philosophy that history is best understood when it is related by those who were actually there on the front lines. I was lucky enough to recognize this early in my career as a public high school history teacher, which began at a time when America was waking up and beginning to notice the deeds of the men and women who had saved the world only a generation before. Most of these WWII veterans had never spoken of their experiences before, but on some instinctual level I sensed they were ready to talk, and more importantly, ready to share their experiences with our young people who were about to go out into the world themselves.

'A Tuskegee Airman Over Europe' is the hours-long conversations with a very special man I was honored to interview in late 2003. It was my privilege to bring Clarence Dart's story to a group of high school students, who got to engage with and learn from him. Mr. Dart went on to combat not only fascism over the skies in Europe, but also racism at home, setting the stage for the American civil rights movement to follow. We were so lucky to speak to him; he passed in 2012, but not before finally going to the White House to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President George W. Bush.

This interview will become a focus for a much wider forthcoming work on the WW II air war over the skies of Europe, the next installment in my 'The Things Our Fathers Saw' series.

Thanks for joining us!
