It’s always been my philosophy that history is best understood when it is related by those who were actually there on the front lines. I was lucky enough to recognize this early in my career as a public high school history teacher, which began at a time when America was waking up and beginning to notice the deeds of the men and women who had saved the world only a generation before. Most of these WWII veterans had never spoken of their experiences before, but on some instinctual level I sensed they were ready to talk, and more importantly, ready to share their experiences with our young people who were about to go out into the world themselves.
